Good assortment of sizes, but not as sharp as others
I ordered these "universal regular point" sewing machine needles for my wife because she does a lot of sewing and goes through needles either from wear or breakage. I recognised three of the six sizes, just from helping her from time to time. I know my wife has an assortment of sharps and ballpoints, and I had assumed these were a mix of the two based on the title. The actual test is when the needle is used with fabric, and this is where I wasn't as helpful as I thought; it turned into a learning experience. My wife noted that the stamped numbers on the needles are in reverse order, such as 18/110 on the packaging, which is stamped on the needle as 110 18. In Canada, the American size is usually printed/stamped as the first number, and the European size (a larger number) appears afterwards, so the order doesn't matter. However, it could be confusing for those learning to sew if they don't understand why there are two numbers. My wife's current sewing projects involve sewing squares of Velcro onto semi-weight upholstery material with a vinyl facing (photo). She used the 90/14 (inconsistent numbering on the packaging), which worked well hemming the semi-weight upholstery, but not the velcro. The lesson for me in this exercise is that a "universal regular point" is not a sharp point as I had assumed. There are at least six types of sewing machine needles based on the roundness of their acute or rounded tip, taper, and whether they have a cutting point. Sharps have an acute tip, and universal tips are rounded for a broader range of fabrics. While my wife does not regularly work with thin fabrics, she now has needles specifically for that application. The four-star review reflects my wife's observation that these universal needles are not as sharp as other universal needles of the same size. It may be the tips are more rounded than others she has ordered in the past.
